Technical options for subsoil management
Work package 5 is used to develop various technical measures to manipulate the subsoil. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of the subsoil for plant growth and thus open up a larger soil volume for the plants. In the first phase of the project, central field experiment I demonstrated that deep loosening combined with compost incorporation resulted in the best yield increases. This technique was further observed in phase II and applied in field trials CF2 and CF3. Since summer crops are especially important due to increasing pre-summer drought, genotype screening was extended to these crops. The monitoring of subsoil management is supported by the development of a subsoil sensor network for the simultaneous recording of, among others, soil moisture, temperature and oxygen content.
